Homework for me

Sherrie asked me, after reading my post yesterday on characters with unexpected combination of traits, which characters I've read recently that I found unconvincing.

And I can't remember.

I remember thinking the thought "hmm, doesn't seem that a person like this would also like that." but I don't remember the details.

So now, I am setting some homework for myself. The next time I find such characters, I will post them here.

In the mean time, I am eager to know if you find any.

I read a book once where every character had the SAME voice. All with a hard sarcastic edge. I'll admit it was entertaining but not very realistic.

Okay, I don't have a bad example, but I have a good example, actually, a couple of them. And, this is interesting to me because these two characters are some of my favorites in all of the literature I've encountered, so maybe I'm just drawn to this sort of thing. Brod, from Everything Is Illuminated is a young woman who every man in the village is attracted to, yet she is very short and sickly skinny. Mahlke from Cat and Mouse is this reclusive, lanky boy with a huge Adam's apple that he has to "hide" by wearing a screwdriver around his neck. Yet, he's the best swimmer in the group and has other "blessings" that get revealed later on. I love when a character is a good unexpected combination like that. But, I'll have to think about some bad examples.

T.Anne: I know what you mean, but if you can provide yjr actual titles, that would be great!

Davin: thanks for the egs. I will definitely look them. You're right, it's not easy to think of "bad" examples. I would be very interested to see your thoughts on the subject in general.

Yat-Yee, I've nominated you for an award on my site. But I like to leave it loose, so you can choose from two of them and can follow the usual award rules or make up your own. Mostly, I want people to come visit your site.

Thank you, Tricia, for wanting to drive traffic to my blog. I hope your generosity comes back tenfold at least!
